Hair Health: What Really Damages Your Hair and How to Protect It
Hair can look strong, but it’s actually very delicate. Over the years, working in the salon and learning the craft, I’ve seen how everyday habits slowly damage hair without people even noticing. Let’s go through the most common things that hurt your hair’s health and what you can do instead.
Coloring and heat styling :
Coloring too often or using hot tools without protection is one of the fastest ways to weaken hair. I used to apply a simple coconut cream before hot styling my clients’ hair, and it created a protective layer that worked like magic. Heat and chemicals open the hair cuticle, so a barrier is essential if you want to keep your hair soft and shiny.
Brushing :
Over-brushing, or brushing too hard, breaks hair fibers. The right way is to detangle gently, ideally starting from the ends and moving up. Hard brushing damages the scalp as well, which affects long-term hair growth.
Diet and vitamins :
Healthy hair doesn’t come only from products, it comes from inside. A good diet makes a big difference. Zinc is especially important — having enough of it even once a week helps strengthen hair. Vitamins in general support growth, while smoking does the opposite. Not many people know that smoking can slow growth and even cause hair loss.
Washing :
Washing with very hot water dries the scalp and strips natural oils. The frequency matters too. Greasy, dry, or medium scalps all need different routines. If you wash too often, you might be removing the protection your hair needs.
Hormones :
Sometimes it’s not about habits but changes in the body. Hormonal shifts can affect volume, texture, and even how fast hair grows. That’s why sudden changes in your hair can also be linked to health, not just products.
Final note :
Taking care of your hair means paying attention to the small details: heat, brushing, diet, washing habits, and even lifestyle choices. When you protect it from daily stress and feed it from the inside, it stays healthier, fuller, and more resilient.
